Trevena

We rebuilt our house over a year between 2017 and 18. We’d owned the plot for 10 years, but the old house had a lot of issues and we wanted to start again from scratch.

We met Jewell Construction as part of the tendering process and immediately got on well with Steve and Martin. They provided a competitive quote and we decided to employ their services for the whole process.

From the start of the project their team got on well with our project manager/architect and overcame problems without hassle. They made sensible suggestions to help keep the process on track and co-ordinated all of the different trades on site really well.

The delivery of the project came in on time and the only budget changes were from our alterations. The end result is a fantastic home which we’ve now enjoyed for 2 years. Any small issues following completion were dealt with quickly and professionally and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone considering a similar undertaking.”

SkyBlueProperties Cornwall

As a development company we have used Jewell Construction over the past five years on a several schemes to include newbuild residential projects, conversions, and refurbishment of commercial and residential units. Some schemes requiring extensive ground works.

A few of the projects have been within sensitive conservation areas or sites with extreme access logistical issues all which Jewell Construction were able to overcome.
The schemes have been professionally built and delivered to specifications as required. Jewell Construction are always able to offer advice or solutions for the work including extra works and finishing’s to assist in the final Completion. They worked well with Cornwall Council and other regulatory bodies and I would highly recommend them for any other construction work.

They worked well with Cornwall Council and other regulatory bodies and I would highly recommend them for any other construction work.

I will take this opportunity of an example summer 2019 whereby; extensive ground works were needed along with a superstructure to a high degree of finishing being Prospect Place – a terrace of three houses within a conservation area in Falmouth. Photographs attached. This project had many unforeseen problems commencing with the mass pile foundations structural retaining wall. requiring Jewel Construction had to be inventive and flexible from the original design due to unknown existing ground conditions and buried services. I am grateful to Jewell Construction for the way they coordinated their works with other trades, which is highly beneficial to the successful conclusion of this project.

We have no hesitation in employing Jewell construction in our future projects and look forward to working with them again.

In conclusion I forward my thanks to Jewell’s team for their contribution. We look forward to the ‘can and will do approach’ throughout.

The Alverton Hotel

I am a director of the Alverton Hotel, and I am pleased to be able to write a client testimonial on Jewell Construction.

In 2015 the hotel needed greater capacity, and wished to build more bedrooms, and the obvious next move was to convert the buildings to the North of the grounds. The project posed numerous challenges; this was the original manor house stables which had been converted during the tenure of the Convent to simple accommodation and a laundry block. The buildings are grade 2* listed, so required careful treatment and detailing. It was important to the Alverton that we provided something very special for our guests; we were looking for a building which would combine a sense of the history with the very best available hotel comforts. As the hotel was to remain open throughout the process a vigilant and careful approach to health and safety was to be vital.

It was early days for Jewell Construction, but I already knew Martin and Steve, and in our exploratory meetings with them on site their enthusiasm and commitment to our vision, along with their practical and sensible approach soon decided our board. We agreed on a simple form of contract that required trust and honesty between us – a little old-fashioned perhaps but time proved this to have been well-founded with them.

The project itself proved to be at least as challenging as we had all expected; new discoveries of old fabric meant we needed to regularly amend the layout and the detailing to preserve and integrate these into the scheme. Martin and Steve embraced this approach and actively contributed to the ideas themselves; their approach was to find solutions rather than problems, always inventively and cooperatively, and always with their trademark sense of humour.

The finishing stages of the project detailing were designed by Matt Hulme of Dynargh Designs; Steve took well to working with Matt, again contributing ideas and technical suggestions. The result was detailing work to an extremely high standard.
Cost control could have been a real issue on this project; Steve and Martin worked cooperatively and honestly with our QS, Wm. G. Weller & Son, resulting in sensible and amicable outcomes for us both.

I have 40 years of experience in the construction industry myself and I was much involved with the day to day process. I can honestly say it was a pleasure to work with Steve and Martin; the standard of The Courtyard is a testimony in itself, and the Alverton Hotel is delighted with the result.

Cornubian Arts and Science Trust

I am happy to provide a reference for Jewell Construction, who were the contractors for a two-stage renovation project carried out at the CAST building in Helston in 2018 and 2019. CAST occupies a late nineteenth-century schools building, which had suffered long neglect. The project brought the building back into use as a studio complex and included provision of much new infrastructure. One of the former classrooms was converted into a café, with a professional kitchen and an outside terrace, and former school toilets were converted into small artists’ studios. The project budget was c.£700k, funded by a Small Capital grant of £499,000 from Arts Council England, with additional grants from Cornwall Council and from donors, trusts and foundations.

Trevor Humphreys QS, the Project Manager for this job, was responsible for the selection process through which Jewell Construction were appointed. They agreed an open-book approach to budget management and Jewell worked closely with Trevor to manage the budget and schedule. Jewell also developed an excellent relationship with the architect, Alison Bunning RIBA, who was appointed to oversee delivery of the project.

We have found Jewell Construction to be absolutely straightforward and honest in their dealings, reliable and considerate when working to tight deadlines, generous and sympathetic to their clients. In local parlance they are ‘good as gold’. I highly recommend them.

The first stage of the project ran through the early months of 2018, with a very tight schedule to complete work in time for the opening of a major contemporary art project, Groundwork, which launched on May 6th. Jewell responded very well to pressure, ensuring that there were always sufficient tradesmen on site to move the job forward efficiently. The project involved coordination with Western Power and with Highways to bring in a new power supply for the building and this was well accomplished. There was intense pressure in the last few weeks of the project, but the work force was well managed and morale remained high throughout. Tenants within the CAST building were treated with courtesy and consideration.

The second stage of the project started in October 2018, after the close of the Groundworks programme. Some quite substantial changes were introduced and parts of the building that had not initially been scheduled for renovation were included in the revised work programme, while other aspects of the project were deferred. Jewell showed themselves to be flexible and considerate in response to these changes. The project funders had set a deadline for completion by the end of the financial year but Jewell again responded well to pressure and this stage of the project was completed on time.

We have found Jewell Construction to be absolutely straightforward and honest in their dealings, reliable and considerate when working to tight deadlines, generous and sympathetic to their clients. In local parlance they are ‘good as gold’. I highly recommend them.
